Tickets were a little steep ($15/person) but we figured it would be worth it, and we were not disappointed! By the time we arrived, most of the seats had been taken but we managed to find two in the very back row. It was good and bad... good because we had a great view of the track and bad because all our pictures turned out fuzzy.
The game is easy to understand, so that makes the match enjoyable. But it's also just entertaining... watching the girls push each other and seeing several wipe-outs is fun, but the minor penalties were the best. There are two kinds of penalties in roller derby: major and minor. Major gets a girl put in the penalty box - three majors and the girl is kicked out of the game. Minor penalties are hilarious. There is a spinning wheel with ridiculous penalties, four of which we got to see last night. Pillow fight, long jump, duel, and arm wrestle. The latter needs no explanation, so I'll talk about the other three instead. Pillow fight sounds pretty obvious, but the pillows are quickly tossed aside as two girls from each team wrestle each other to the ground. Duel is similar - it's supposed to be a 2-lap race around the track, but the girls are also trying to pull each other down in order to win the race. This, of course, turns into another wrestling match. Long jump is the least exciting - a girl from each team skates as fast as she can and then jumps as far as she can, landing on her knees. All of the minor penalties are decided by the crowd... seems unfair, but it's definitely more fun!
It was fun night out and we definitely plan on going back!
